TEST DRIVE MEME

test drive meme
Welcome to the opening test drive of [community profile] goodmorrow! If you're just getting here, you can find our game premise here and our full navigation here.

It's a new game, but you don't have to play a newbie! This game has a mechanic that allows people to app characters who aren't new to the setting. Please check over on our application guidelines for more information about how it works. We've also got a summary of World Events that occurred prior to this TDM, so your oldbie can have some things to reference.

Thank you for playing! We're excited to have you.

the summoning

Arrivals There is always a buzz around the time of a summoning ritual. Will there be dozens? Or will this time only yield a handful? Will the stakes become dramatic enough for there to be a glimpse of one of the Old Ones, and the chance to partake in their incomprehensible greatness? The ones who believe consider it a day of hope and new beginnings. However, there are much more mundane concerns for the skeptics. Summoning means that there will be a whole new group of displaced folks who'll need to be oriented. They'll come hurting and confused, squirming with the bone-deep pain of travel and weary after hours of hearing about how they've been Chosen to herald the approach of the Old Ones. People will be here seeking help, and most of the native townsfolk only understand how to preach at newcomers. The new arrivals will likely need help from more experienced expats who better understand where they're coming from.

dessicated and unremarkable

Forbidden Knowledge Even after the end of the summoning ritual, many kept their eyes watching the sky. There is always the risk of summoning more than just a new batch of novitiates. When pulling things from other worlds, chances are high that something else might tag along.

A few hours after the end of the introductory sermon, scraps of paper start to blow down from the sky. They travel on the breeze and seem to get into everything. They land on roofs and float through open windows. They get tangled in tree branches and end up underfoot on walking paths. Page after page delicately makes its way to the earth.

It must be wisdom from the cosmos! The rumor sweeps its way across town in hushed whispers. The gossips are saying that the elders want the pages collected, so that they can properly archive and study them. They promise a handsome reward to those who can gather enough to fill a tome, but that seems somehow less attractive, even as something to wish about. Whether deliberately hunting out the pages or accidentally encountering them in everyday life, it will soon be obvious that these are pages full of something best left unseen.

Some of the manuscript pages seem mundane enough. The words seem strangely familiar, as if they might be legible if one focuses on them hard enough. It's just a matter of figuring out handwriting or deciphering a dialect. It must be. A page might prove so engrossing that it leaves a person in an enthralled state, silently locked in a quest to understand something that looks so comprehensible only for it to veer off into the uncanny. This lock might leave them tremendously suggestible to any words spoken around them, their minds struggling and desperate enough to latch on to anything comprehensible at all.

Other pages seem less similar to human writing and will likely create less of a hold on those with the misfortune to view them. The pages covered in glyphs and arcane symbols feel almost empowering their foreignness, almost as if one might simply let the experience wash over them and let it run through them. Those unlucky enough to state too long at one of those pages might find themselves overwhelmed by instances of magical outbursts. It feels like a strange sort of sneeze as the arcane energy suddenly sparks a small thunderbolt into existence, or turns a bushel of hay into a solid block of iron. The effects are seemingly random, but wear off on their own in a few minutes. It's probably fine. What kind of damage could be done in such a short time?

This might be a relief to the illiterate members of the community, if it wasn't for the leathery pages. More parchment than paper in texture, these pages seem to carry something ominous in the rough fibers of their material. When touched without protective gloves, these pages force their handler to feel a glimpse of unspeakable suffering. It comes from a place beyond pain, lighting parts of the mind that were never intended for use. Screaming might be a way to express it, but more often it manifests in an expression of extreme emotion. Hysterical mania seems nice until it doesn't end and keeps a person up at night unable to stop laughing. Murderous rage might be inconvenient for the other members of the village. Whatever the emotion is, it's gone far beyond any normal limitation and will stay that way for the next several hours.

Enjoy the hunt, Revelbrooke. Try not to end up with too many papercuts.

Yes, you've been brought to---

[ But the speech dies on her lips as his voice really catches up with her and her eyes find his face. This is not some random newcomer, someone waiting for her normal speech.

It's Gale.

Hope sparks in her breast for the first time in three years and for a moment, Shadowheart just stands there staring at him. ]

Is it really you?

Shadowheart?

[ Gale stands there, and for a moment he forgets that he is altogether naked; that was what being taken by surprise would do to a wizard. But she was dressed.. differently, this Shadowheart was not the one that he remembered; he could see the time markings on her and he.. but he'd, just had dinner with her last night? And yet she had the look of someone used to this setting. ]

Ah yes, it is me however.. you are different from the yourself that I just left?

[ Better to process this now before he gave up all of his memories for power, perhaps. ]

It's been three years.

[ There's a quiver to her voice, a shake. Not out of fear, but out of incredulity. Everything about this place got worse and worse, but of course its existence was nothing in the grand scheme of Faerun. Of course three years of torture had been nothing more than a blink of an eye back home.

Was this a joke? Was her Lady testing her?

If she was, Shadowheart had surely failed by turning her back on Her. ]

So, yes. I guess I am different.

[ Incredible.

This however brought more questions then there were answers to Gale but this also meant that Shadowheart could provide those answers, that is if she wished. However, he was not tone deaf, he could tell that she seemed to be agitated and thus he stood down from launching questions at her quite yet. ]

I wonder if this has anything to do with the Tadpole that we all share.

[ Theories danced around in his head like sugarplums while he watched her carefully. ] Honestly, I do not want to inundate you with questions so I will start with this.

[ Deep breath, taken by the Wizard of Waterdeep ]

Is there anything that I may do to assist?

[ She's about to tell him that she's never seen any of them before, and that it was unlikely that the tadpole had anything to do with it. She was going to talk about powers and losing them and gaining them back (allegedly).

But instead he asks if he can help and her expression sets, hardening. ]

No. If there were anything to be done, I would've done it ages ago. Besides, without your magic, what do you think you're going to do?

[ It's cruel of her. But cruelty was something she'd learned young. Cruelty was a means of survival, when the emotions that sought to drown you crept in. ]

[ Ah yes, there was no magic that he had to speak with. Not the familiar crackle of it, however because of the lack of the ability, he could feel that the Netherese Orb inside of him felt.. almost dormant. Except he knew it wasn't, perhaps just aspected into something cold-- it felt like a block of ice, frozen in some sort of time warp or distortion.

It was unsettling.

He had a feeling though that it would take a lot right now to levy it to detonate, at least there was that, at least there was that for now though it would probably change once his powers started to awaken. ]

Clearly you are wearing the strange robes that everyone else are adorned in so I am assuming that you know more about this then I do. Thus why I am asking you if there is something I need to do. I apologize for asking things to make you defensive however, you have the luxury of three years and perhaps a clearer goal than I can comprehend.

I think that depends on whether you intend to worship the Old Ones or not. If you're willing, then you can learn their Truth and get your powers back. For a price.

[ That's how everything is. There's always a prince. And she still couldn't do a simple cantrip. ]

The Old Ones?

[ And thus that is how Gale came about to be intrigued. ] I take it you are not talking about the Faerûn Pantheon.

[ Of which likely Mystra was not apart of-- he'd actually never heard of any of the dieties being referred to in such a manner. And Shadowheart would likely know that Gale did have to get all of his questions out, for reasons that had everything to do with him getting the full story. ]

Correct. We've been summoned here to help prepare to bring them back. Apparently, they'll bring prosperity to everyone here.

[ She's not sure he's supposed to use the word "apparently" but these are friends from home. She imagines they can cut her a little slack when it comes to them. ]

Well then, tell me more about these Old Ones then.

[ There, he is keeping himself open-minded; he's not been asked to harm anyone as of yet so there is no such lock and key there that would cause that inherent stubborness to come out in him.

Though Shadowheart knew Gale, would know likely what to say that could cheat his mind toward accepting this what now faced him; he was a bit more of a tough sell then the others were, likely less so than Wyll but for the most part he did have a strong vein of honour in him when it came to preservation of life. ]

They are the key to having our magic return. They roamed this world, at one point, only to leave. These people believe that only through returning the Old Ones will everything be restored to as it should have been. Us included.

[ It's a pretty vague description, but so is what they've been generally told. ]

We can't go home. So we might as well work together towards a common goal.

[personal profile] nethereseorb 2023-10-08 07:38 pm (UTC)(link)
[ That was the most Shadowheart explanation ever; it was short, sweet and to the point. Everything that was suited to a Daughter of Shar, but at least she did explain enough for Gale to get a proper gist of this. ]

So there is absolutely no chance of going home?

[ Honestly, Gale had a problem believing that was the case-- especially since this was dealing with a God and gods were notoriously picky and capricious. ] Their was no promise of being returned to Faerûn on good behavior?

[ As if any of them were good, in hindsight that was indeed a laugh from the most rollicking of bards ]
